CHARLIE AMOS, AUTHOR BIO
Delaware County, Oklahoma is to Charlie Amos what Lafayette County, Mississippi was to William Faulkner. Rooted in realism, his characters are connected to the landscape that shapes their identity. The flint ridges and limestone bluffs on the western fringes of the Ozark Plateau hardens their residents today as they did the heroes of the previous two centuries.
Raised in the shadow of those ridges Charlie listened carefully to stories of outlaw gangs from prohibition days. Cowboy adventures on the open range, which lasted until the 1940’s in the area. Cherokee residents still whisper their tales of spirit animals and evil forces. Veterans of foreign wars and domestic feuds speak low of battles fought and some still waging. An area rich in history and characters was surely bound to produce story tellers.
Charlie Amos is just one of those story tellers. A graduate from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Agriculture he spent a few years studying abroad in Mexico. More informal education than formal. As informative as the land of Villa and Zapata was he eventually had to earn a living. He spent years working in utility forestry. Ultimately bored with the industry and more so the people in management he used what he considered his real degree. A commercial driver’s license provided a way to see the country and get paid to do it. Truck stop professors, resident waitresses and travelers from Alberta to El, Paso offered views of the world many never experience. They spoke and he listened.
These days the eighteen wheeler has been swapped for a feed truck. Along with raising cattle, Charlie and his wife have three children and live in the hills of Delaware County, Oklahoma where the red fern grows. In 2020 he began collecting stories for newspapers and magazine articles. In 2024 he became a member of Western Writer’s of America. June of 2025 he published his first book “On the Scout” a story about two cowboys in Oklahoma Territory dealing with the volatile year of 1889. Recently in October of 2025 Charlie was honored with three awards at the Ozark Creative Writer’s Conference in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. One award for his debut novel, one for a short story and another for a humorous small town article featuring a ranch rodeo.
“Call in the Dogs” Charlie’s second novel in the new Green Country Series promises to bring back characters from “On the Scout” and few new ones taking the story on unexpected twist. If the cows don’t get out, Charlie will continue the series. Writing westerns for westerners, and everyone else.
